Brief Garden | Tripadvisor

Located just 10 kilometers from Bentota, Brief Garden is an enchanting 20-acre masterpiece created by Bevis Bawa, the elder brother of Sri Lanka’s iconic architect Geoffrey Bawa. Since 1970, this breathtaking garden has been open to the public, showcasing over 100 species of exotic plants and unique artwork.

A Garden Born from Passion

Brief Garden was originally a rubber plantation, inherited by Bawa in the late 1920s. Inspired by his love for landscape design, he began transforming the space in the 1960s into the lush, serene garden it is today. Bevis Bawa personally cultivated the garden, ensuring its beauty remained intact until his death in 1992.

Wandering Through Nature’s Artistry

Visitors to Brief Garden are invited to wander through a series of interwoven pathways, all leading back to the main house. Along the way, you'll find secluded seating areas perfect for quiet reflection amidst the greenery. The garden’s centerpiece, a towering Frangipani tree, was the first plant to take root under Bawa’s care and serves as the focal point for the garden’s design.

The Main House and Art Collection

The main house, Bawa’s former residence, is a treasure trove of eclectic art and sculptures. It features everything from thought-provoking modern artwork to erotic sculptures, making it a unique and sometimes surprising experience. Visitors are advised to accompany children and avoid touching the antique pieces.

Whether you're a garden enthusiast, an art lover, or someone looking for a peaceful retreat, Brief Garden is a destination that should not be missed when visiting Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Its combination of stunning landscapes, intriguing art, and rich history makes it a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
